Pearl Earrings
When I was growing up I used to love playing with my Mothers drop down pearl earrings. I thought that they were the greatest earrings ever. She used to wear them every single day. When I was older she let me know that the pearl earrings had been a gift from my father. The last one before he passed on. He had died of lung cancer when my brother and I were still babies. My mother wore the pearl earrings in memory of my father. It was her way of making sure we always had something to remind us of our father.
Even after she remarried she continued to wear them. Then one father’s day she took them out and gave us each one earring. She said that she did not need them to remember him by. We were old enough to take care of them, too keep them safe and not lose them. She thought that we might like to keep them as a way to have a connection with our birth father. Our step father fully supported her decision.
